Charles Baty was a harmonica-playing UC student when he decided to switch to guitar full time and formed a blues band. After relocating to Sacramento, Baty quickly emerged as a take-no-prisoners, one-of-a-kind guitarist, equally at home playing swing, jazz, blues, or any variations he could imagine. With the addition of Rick Estrin's outstanding harp and voice, a drummer and a bass player, Little Charlie and the Nightcats were born. The band signed to Alligator Records in 1986 and had a terrific run on the blues circuit. In 2008 Little Charlie retired from the touring music scene but still performs with his Gypsy Jazz Caravan and select guest spots with other artists.
"Can anyone name a better guitarist than Little Charlie?" asked Blues Revue.
The Chicago Reader said of Chrles Baty as "... superb musicianship. Baty sometimes sounds as if he's growing musically right in front of your eyes."
